History

Radiation Professionals is a young company started two years ago to fill an identified dearth in the provision of expert radiation advice to the mining, exploration, oil & gas and industrial sectors in general with special focus on the uranium exploration and mining sectors in particular. The formation of the company brought together a wide range of expertise from industry, academia and government that form the basis of our expert consulting group today.

Radiation Professionals include in our client list Departments from the Western Australian, Northern Territory and Federal Governments, Australian companies from small exploration to large mining companies and large multi-national mining, environmental and petroleum companies. Some of our recent projects include:

  • Baseline and ongoing radiological assessment of mineral sands mining and processing operations including providing RSO functions
  • Design and implementation of radiological baseline assessment for 2008 radioactive waste disposal operations at the Mt Walton Intractable Waste Disposal Facility (IWDF)
  • Supervising packaging, transport and disposal operations for the 2008 radioactive waste disposal at the IWDF
  • Radiological assessment on offshore NORM’s affected gas plants
  • Provision of a complete training package (including RSO) for fixed radiation gauges at a new mine and processing facility in Lao People's Democratic Republic including consultation with government
  • Audit of processing plant radiation management practices and generation of complete radiation management documentation.
  • Assisting business and the IAEA in drafting radiation guidelines for mining operations in The United Republic of Tanzania

Managing Director of Radiation Professionals, Anthony is a physicist and Radiation Consultant who came into the company with experience in Medical Physics, instrumentation (including 2 years with the Gemini Observatory), teaching physics at Curtin University (where he is still an Adjunct Research Associate) and also as a company director (Hightech Corporation of which he is still a director). Anthony has a wide coverage of expertise in the radiation field including (but not restricted to) running all levels of training courses, creating radiation management documentation for all levels of industry and mining, planning and conducting environmental studies, designing and maintaining new electronic equipment and supervising transport of radioactive substances (including the disposal operations at the Mt Walton Intractable Waste Disposal Facility).
 
Jonathon Thwaites

Director of Radiation Professionals, Jonathon is one of only a few people licensed as a Qualified Radiation Expert by the WA Radiation Safety Act and Regulations and he comes to Radiation Professionals as one of the most experienced Radiation Experts in Western Australia. Jonathon has over 30 years in the physics and radiation safety industries, providing training, designing complete safety systems including radiation shielded rooms, compliance testing and general radiation consulting. Jonathon has an extensive knowledge of regulations as well as one of the most complete repertoire of compliance testing experience and equipment in Australia. Jonathon is also the Radiation Safety Officer for the University of WA, the Mount Hospital, Hollywood Private Hospital and the Mt Walton Intractable Waste Facility.

Keith is a Senior Radiation Consultant with over 20 years of experience providing radiation safety and management advice to the mineral sands industry in particular and mining and hospitals in general. Keith ran his own company RadWise, however has semi-retired and now consults for and mentors to Radiation Professionals. Prior to that Keith spent over 20 years teaching (among other things) Radiation Physics at Curtin University. Keith has extensive knowledge of regulations, radiological assessments and personal dosimetry. Keith's knowledge and experience is an invaluable asset to Radiation Professionals.

Director of Radiation Professionals, Ashley is a physicist and Radiation Consultant with over 7 years experience in electronics and instrumentation development including running a company. Prior to that time Ashley was the Deputy Radiation Safety Officer for Curtin University (where he also is still an Adjunct Research Associate). Ashley brings his innovative management skills as well as his extensive radiation knowledge to the company. Ashley also has one of the most complete set of qualifications in X-Ray and Laser servicing in Western Australia.

Simon Booth has been working in Radiation Safety since 2001as both a Government Regulator and Industry Consultant. Simon Holds a Bachelor of Science (Physics), is a qualified trainer and assessor undr the Australian Quality Training Framework and is licenced to handle/use radioactive substances and irradiating apparatus in Western Australia. Simon's esxperience includes all facets of radiation safety including: managing radioactive waste disposal; education and training; knowledge of relevant legislation; regulatory licencing and registration of radiation users and owner's; training and consulting and emergency response.
